The Business Practices That Got Jeff Hunt Construction Ahead
Published on September 13, 2018 by ecityadmin
It’s early 2003. Jeff Hunt, the founder of Jeff Hunt Construction, walked into the office of the Greater Houston Builders Association, less than one month after having his business out in the world.
He wanted to know if they offered classes he could take; when they said that they did, he asked if he could join, in spite of not being referred, sent or sponsored. Over the years, Hunt has served in many volunteer capacities at the GHBA, including as a member of the board of directors and Chairman of their Remodeler's Council.
It’s been 15 years since that day, and Hunt’s company has prospered, to say the least. Not only financially, but also in reputation; during the devastation that was Hurricane Harvey, Hunt actively worked in the community to help rebuild the most affected areas. He knows the difficulty the homeowners of the area are facing even a year later, but he’s willing to help them any way he can. It’s just the way he has decided to handle himself in the business: straightforward, trying to give back, and absolutely driven.
In an interview with Qualified Remodeler magazine, Hunt outlined his best business practices that have allowed Jeff Hunt Construction to keep going for almost twenty years.

- Loyalty to trade contractors and employees that have earned it
- Market, market, market: “You have to celebrate and broadcast every single good thing that you can.”
- Discipline: If it’s a 40-hour week what’s needed to get things done, then so be it.
- Fairness: Must be prepared to admit and fix your mistakes, and expect to be treated fairly as well
- Use systems and processes: Ensures everything goes smoothly.
- Know what you don’t want to do: Set limits, both physically and practically.
- Measure results; So you know where everything comes from.
- Spend time on the business: Developing strategies, charting a course, writing job descriptions, etc.
- Plug into your association: Hunt also teaches courses at the GHBA and has been active behind the scenes for many years.
